For international educators, studying war goes against the grain. Our inclination is to think of peace and to forefront idealism; this reflects the historical origins of modern study abroad and our ethical beliefs. However, if that is our sole imperative, we miss a significant educational opportunity and deprive students of an understanding of key aspects of contemporary reality - not least a comprehension of where countries come from and what constitutes national identity.
The essays in this volume range widely around inter-related topics of war, national memory, and identity. They illuminate, across time and space, the many ways in which the study of the impact of war can enrich the curriculum of education abroad.
